The 309 Road

The 309 Road to The Waterworks, Coromandel, NZ

This is one scenic drive!

New Zealand’s famous 309 Road is a scenic 22-kilometre journey which crosses the backbone of the Coromandel Peninsula from east to west. Mostly unsealed, it showcases spectacular scenery as it winds through lush farmland, pine forests and extensive areas of beautiful native bush.

Some say they named the 309 for the number of bends, while others say it’s the number of minutes the horse-drawn carriage used to take.

A leisurely drive along The 309 Road as part of your trip through the Coromandel region will give you a feel for the real New Zealand countryside and inspire you through its undeniable beauty.

There are a number of stops you can make along the route if you wish to turn this short road trip into a full-day experience.
